What Happened to Disney Channel?

Celia Heffernan, Staff Writer

Remember when you would rush home from school to see the second part of your favorite Disney show? What about waking up on a Saturday morning and eating your favorite breakfast with Good Luck Charlie in the background? Well, throw that in the garbage because now, its Bizardvark and Jake Paul is screaming at you to do dangerous activities for views on YouTube. To 8-year-olds. Oh yeah! Go skateboarding into a wall or play with a blowtorch! The viewers will love that.

What happened to the good shows? Did Disney Channel just forget? The Suite Life of Zac and Cody, Good Luck Charlie, Wizards of Waverly Place  – how can you start off so strong and fall so far into the pits of atrocious television entertainment? I can even accept Jessie or Austin and Ally, maybe Liv and Maddie, but anything after that: NOPE! Horrible; unbearable to watch. Mighty Med: bad. Bunk’D? Catchy theme song, but turn off after that.

What about the movies? Lemonade Mouth was a classic! Zombies: what even was that? Starstruck or Let it Shine? Put it on right now, and I’ll watch it all the way through. Put on Sneakerella, however, and I am leaving. You won’t ever see me again.

I remember trying to rewatch these shows once I got older, and I was always disappointed. After waitinganxiously for the Austin and Ally series finale in 5th grade, all I can think of now is how dirty they did Ally with that wig. Truly horrendous. How can you have a great show like Boy Meets World and then follow it up with Girl Meets World? Such a letdown.

And they don’t even treat the actors right! They force these 20-year-olds to act like they are 15 and shove them into the ideal that girls are either airheaded or “not like other girls.” Guys are either the nerd that no one wants or the jock that no one can get. (Except the airheaded blonde. Or brunette if you are Riley Matthews.) This just creates standards that young kids look up to and follow along with. Seriously, Disney Channel – do better.
