5 Reasons Why Tangled is the Greatest Disney Movie To Exist

Reasons 1-5:

KIDDING! I’M KIDDING……not really.

ANYWAY

  • The plot. Seriously, can we talk about how genius the plot is? There’s a princess with magical flower power hair who’s been snatched by a decomposing hag and lives 18 years of her life in a tower deep in the woods. THEN, a fugitive thief who‘s biggest achievements in life are probably stealing a crown and making enemies with a horse, takes the princess to see her dream. They sing with ruffians in a building, they almost drown in cave (SURPRISE the horse lives), they dance with villagers, watch lanterns from a boat and inevitably fall in love. But it isn’t without conflict, which bring us to number 2

  •  The Villain: Remember the decomposing girlie we mentioned earlier? That’s our villain, Mother Gothel. Once her precious “keep me young” flower was taken from her to save the pregnant queen (such an inconvenience) Mother Gothel decides that the best course of action is to sneak into the castle and a steal a piece of Rapunzel’s hair where the flower’s gift now resides. When she notices the hair loses its power when it gets cut, she then decides to just princess-nap Rapunzel instead. (Gotta roll with the punches am I right?) She’s intelligent enough to sneak into the King and Queen’s room, double-cross the Stabbington brothers, manipulate Rapunzel, AND keep Rapunzel hidden from the kingdom. Are you joking? Top tier villain!

  • Characters: Our main characters are, Orphan Thief Flynn Rider, Lost Princess Rapunzel, Horse That’s Smarter Than I Am (Maximus), and Chameleon Who Sucks At Hide And Seek (Pascal). Flynn Rider, who turned to thieving in hopes of a better life, is a smug but caring, smart but funny, and one of, if not the best, Disney prince. (Shhh you know I’m right) Rapunzel is kind, caring, and lively. She’s got a hunger to learn and live because of that teenie weenie tower. Maximus was a guard’s horse and, as Flynn’s enemy, chases him around the whole movie. Pascal is Rapunzel’s tower companion who’s a little green ball of protectiveness, compassion, and fun. All the characters together with or without the rufians, are the most chaotic and crazy thing but that’s what makes for a good movie! Then we have some side characters like the Stabbington brothers. You know, the big burly twins with the sideburns and scary deep voices? Well, voice. The one with the eyepatch doesn’t utter a word the entire movie, but regardless they add a lot to the movie.

  • The Music: The music in Tangled fits so seamlessly to whatever scene it’s in and they’re do fun. You cannot tell me honestly that you hear “I’ve Got a Dream” and not smile or laugh because of it. And because of that song, we know that Bruiser knits, Killer sews, Fang does little puppet shows, and Vladimir collects ceramic unicorns. “Mother Knows Best” is just basically throwing insults at Rapunzel and “When Will My Life Begin” lets the audience into Rapunzel’s feelings on the tower. The whole soundtrack is fun, exciting, and heartfelt.

  • The Small Details: There are so many little details in this movie that make it all the more better. One of the apparent ones is how Mother Gothel only shows affection to Rapunzel’s hair. She’s constantly putting the hair in front of Rapunzel’s face and only kissing her hair. Flynn, however, always pulls the hair out of Rapunzel’s face and ultimately frees her from it at the end of the movie. There’s also the fact that Mother Gothel always makes Rapunzel run into her hug as if making her work for affection while The Queen, Rapunzel’s true mother, goes to her first.

Bonus Point: The animation: Have you watched Princess and The Frog? If you haven’t then there must be something seriously wrong with you and there’s a whole different conversation we need to have. But the point is, that movie came out a year before Tangled. It has 2D animation and it’s good, but when you compare it to Tangled, it’s crazy how well animation can improve in a year. AND, to make Rapunzel’s hair, Disney animators had to create new software. Animating it was such tedious work that the animators played thousands of games of Mario Kart just to keep themselves sane. It all paid off though. From The Sundrop Flower to the green grass, to the people and the lanterns the whole movie is just beautiful.
