Broadway, the biggest theater company in the world, has been around forever and with that, you must keep cycling out old shows. Lately, there have been a lot of big musicals closing, including the longest-running Broadway show, Phantom of the Opera. The 1986 opening show has run for 36 years and is now having its final show on February 18, 2023. Beetlejuice just had their last show on January 8th of this year. The show opened in 2018 and closed because sales were weak. That’s no surprise; Covid has scared people from traveling to this day. Broadway closed for the first time when Covid-19 paralyzed the world. Most actors didn’t even know that their last show would be on a random day in March, and that they would never open to a full house ever again.

Mean Girls, a movie musical adaptation, closed on March 11th, 2020. They closed for Covid and never opened their show up again. The show was a hit from the start. People loved the movie and some loved the musical even more, so it was sad to see it go. Another show that have recently closed was Dear, Evan Hansen. The 6 Tony-winning show closed on September 18th of 2022. The show was previously adapted into a movie, as a kind of goodbye to the coming-of-age musical.

Despite all these huge shows closing, a lot more will be opening. This includes a spin-off of Cinderella, which will be opening soon on February 17, 2023. More shows opening are A Dolls House, Parade, Dancin’, and many more to come. So, get down to New York before your favorite musicals close their curtains.
