The 80th Golden Globes were hosted on January 10,2023, with Jerod Carmichael as the host.

The Golden Globes have always been a controversial event with many actors such as Brendan Fraser coming out to say that the organization is corrupt. Jerrod Charmichael also called out the HFPA (who are responsible for organizing the event ) in his monologue stating that “this show, the Golden Globe Awards … didn’t have a single Black member until George Floyd died.”

And that was just the beginning. Evan Peters took home the award for Best Actor in a Mini-Series or Motion Picture for TV for his role as Jeffery Dahmer in DAHMER – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story. The show received critical acclaim and became Netflix’s second most-watched English-language series of all time within 28 days, but it didn’t sit well with the families of Dahmer’s victims, who were not informed that the series was in production.

In fact, after his recent win, the mother of one of Dahmer’s victims Tony Hughes criticized Peters for not mentioning the families impacted by Dahmer’s crimes during his acceptance speech. Although this is not the first time the Globes were shrouded in controversy – as in 2018 Brendan Fraser accused alleged HFPA former president Philip Berk of sexually assaulting him in 2003. Since then, Fraser was nominated for Best Actor in a Drama Motion Picture for his performance in The Whale but lost to Austin Butler. He did not attend the Globes, stating in an interview with Time magazine that he has “more history with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association than [he has] respect for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.” Fraser also added, “No, I will not participate.”

After being embroiled in multiple scandals over the years, the Golden Globes have lost significant viewership and prestige, now only be viewed as a drunken precursor to the Oscars.
