The USMNT’s (United States men’s national soccer team) World Cup match against England drew 15.4 million viewers on Fox. That makes it the most-watched men’s soccer match ever on U.S. television. The thing about that number is that that is only the numbers for Fox, it does not include the views on other streaming services like Tubi or people that watched it illegally.

The main question with the match is why did this random World Cup match generate so many views? From a logical standpoint, it does not make any sense whatsoever, this was a match that had two teams that are not very good and one team being a country that’s focus is not even Soccer. This match was not even that entertaining, it ended in a draw, which is a sort of win for the USMNT, since they were projected to lose. The real reason why it got so many views was because of the memes. Yes, that is right, the memes. There were so many jokes and memes made about this match, like people saying that it is the “rematch from 1776” and all sorts of comments like that. Things went “crazy” on Twitter and Instagram with the banter and bickering between Americans and British folk. A specific image went around that was comparing the US to England with things that were absurd to compare with. Such as waffle houses, SEC Championships, 4th of Julys, etc.

Therefore, this USA vs England game was single handedly the most watched Soccer game in US television history, and it probably will remain that way until another event, like so, happens.
