Brooklyn Net’s basketball star Kyrie Irving has found himself in the middle of a controversy; he posted a link on Twitter to the movie, “Hebrews to Negroes: Wake Up Black America” which contained antisemitic themes. When he finally responded to the controversy due to the movie he posted, he took responsibility by saying, “I am aware of the negative impact of my post towards the Jewish community, and I take responsibility.” He also commented on the antisemitic themes in the movie; he said, “I do not believe everything said in the documentary was true or reflects my morals and principles.” He also informed people that he opposes “all forms of hatred and oppression and stand strong with communities that are marginalized and impacted every day.” To atone for the problems, he and the Brooklyn Nets donate 500 thousand dollars to groups that help stop the spread of antisemitism.

Consequently, there were outcomes for what he did. Nike suspended their shoe contract with Irving, and he was given a five-game suspension from the NBA. The Net’s gave Kyrie a list of six things to do to be able to return from suspension. He has to apologize for the film and condemn it, donate 500 thousand to anti-hate causes, go through sensitivity and antisemitism training, meet with Jewish leaders, and meet with Net’s owner and show an understanding of what happened.

Kyrie Irving is an NBA star who, at his best, was averaging around 23 or more points per game. The Net’s game against the Bulls caused fans to attack Kyrie on his poor performance. In that game he only scored four points and missed six three pointers. Some speculate team problems in the Net’s and Irving’s lack of team spirit and ignoring leadership. With Irving’s recent antisemitism and declining game performance, many wonder if Kyrie Irving will continue to play basketball for the NBA next season.
