Pride of Collierville Band Scores Big at BOA Competition

Achieving Their Goals
On Saturday, October 22, the Pride of Collierville Marching Band achieved an incredible feat at the Indianapolis BOA Super Regional Competition. With bright lights shining on them in the middle of Lucas Oil Stadium, they faced a considerable amount of pressure. However, their magnificent performance masked any ounce of nervousness. In a competition of the best 84 marching bands in the country, our band was ranked #17 with a score of 81.5. Such a feat has never been achieved by this program, and it has already had a sizable impact.
For years, band directors Thomas Richardson and Carissa Burgess have worked tirelessly to improve the band. Though Collierville High School has always had a band, it has grown significantly in recent years. The program has transformed from a mediocre ensemble to the world-class marching band we know and love. According to Richardson, being considered one of top bands in the country “has always been something [they’ve] strived for,” and their recent accomplishment has “got [them] one step closer.” Though the band reached their initial goal, the journey did not come without its struggles.
Their Sacrifice
Anyone who has been in band understands the sacrifice and time commitment that comes with it. Typically, band members endure long hours and many strenuous practices to craft an incredible show. The band directors, however, have even more responsibilities. With 168 students, it takes a great deal of preparation for such a large and important trip. The planning began back in January with organizing travel and accommodations for over 200 students and helpers. This support was crucial to the band’s success. “We are blessed to have lots of people invested in the students’ success and their dedication helps the planning for these big trips possible,” stated Richardson. This support was crucial to the band’s success, laying the foundation for an incredible performance.
Clearly, the months of intensive planning and practice paid off, and Collierville could not be prouder of our beloved band. Congratulations, Pride of Collierville, on this amazing accomplishment!
