Why Valentine’s Day is a Terrible Holiday

Valentine’s Day is a day all about love and gifts, and it sucks.

Unless you’re getting gifts then there’s really nothing good about it. What’s even the point of Valentine’s Day? When you’re in a relationship, it’s basically an obligation to give other people chocolate and roses. But most people are too shy to even ask anyone to be their valentine, so the overall purpose of this day is down the drain. The last time I remember someone having a valentine was in elementary school, and all they did was hold hands on the playground. How romantic is that?

All Valentines’ movies make Valentine’s Day seem like it’s a ray of sunshine when in reality it’s an awkward sweaty ball of garbage. The gifts on Valentine’s Day always have the worst phrases on them. For example, most teddy bears will have little words on them like “Happy Valentine’s Day. I love you beary much.” If I received this as a gift, it would be thrown away. Just looking at the Valentine’s stuff at Target makes me cringe, especially since they never even put that much effort. Some people might not get gifts since they might take them out to dinner. That’s basic and the bare minimum. It’s so useless when couples of like thirty years go on dates like it’s been thirty years just stay home it’s not worth it. Think of something heartfelt rather than a basic meal that may not even be enjoyable.

Honestly, the best thing to do is have a friend be your valentine. Seeing couples in the hallway especially the cringey ones on Valentine’s Day makes me want to gouge my eyes out. Look, I’m happy for couples on Valentine’s Day but at the same time, I know they’re probably just going to break up so who cares. I hate those couples who want everyone else to know that they are each other’s valentines, it’s corny and attention seeking so get over yourself.

Don’t get me started on the candy hearts with messages on them, they all have stupid things on them like “you shine.” It’s a lie and you know it. We all know you went out with your mom to find the best gift for your partner. On the other hand, it is sad to see people get rejected on Valentine’s Day but honestly half the time they deserve it. If you are holding up a sign saying “I love you a latte” with little hearts on it then you deserve to be rejected. Overall, Valentine’s Day can be cute and sentimental to some, but please just hang out normally without a cringe-fest.
