CUMBERLAND COUNTY, PA — A 22-year-old woman was taken into custody after a stolen sedan allegedly led Pennsylvania State Police on a chase and crashed into a home in Fairview Township early Wednesday morning.

State police said the vehicle, a dark blue Hyundai, first drew attention after a trooper on Interstate 581 received an alert for a stolen Pennsylvania registration plate at 12:17 a.m. When the trooper tried to stop the car, the driver fled.

The pursuit continued southbound on Interstate 83 and then onto Fishing Creek Road before the car left the roadway at Fishing Creek Road and Lewisberry Road and struck the residence.

Troopers traced the car to a stolen plate alert on Interstate 581

According to Pennsylvania State Police, the incident began when a trooper noticed a stolen-plate alert connected to the Hyundai on Interstate 581 in Cumberland County. The alert involved a Pennsylvania registration plate, and the trooper attempted a traffic stop soon after receiving it.

Police said the driver did not stop. Instead, the sedan sped away, leading troopers from the interstate onto other roads in the area. The chase moved from Interstate 581 to Interstate 83 and then to Fishing Creek Road as officers followed the vehicle southbound.

The sequence of roads shows how quickly the situation escalated from a plate check to a pursuit that crossed multiple roadways in the county. State police have not described any other vehicles being involved in the crash.

Crash at Fishing Creek Road and Lewisberry Road caused major damage

State police said the Hyundai left the roadway at the intersection of Fishing Creek Road and Lewisberry Road in Fairview Township and hit a residence. The impact caused extensive damage to the home, according to troopers.

The vehicle was later confirmed by police to have been reported stolen to the Lower Paxton Township Police Department. After the crash, the driver was identified as 22-year-old Candyce Bond and taken into custody.

Police did not immediately say how fast the vehicle was traveling or what caused it to leave the road. The crash site left the house in rough shape and disrupted the family that lives there.

Family inside the house escaped injury as pets narrowly avoided the impact

The family living in the home was asleep when the car hit, but no one inside was hurt. The homeowner described the incident as a close call for the household pets, which were also inside at the time.

Luke Sheesley said the family has six dogs in the house. Two of them were crated overnight because they are younger and tend to damage things, and the car entered the home near those crates.

“Where the car entered the house was right on top of the two crates,” Sheesley said.

He said the placement of the crates may have helped shield the pets from the worst of the crash. While no one was injured, the family had to deal with a frightening scene and an immediate displacement from their home.

Home lost power and water after the crash, forcing the family out

The collision caused more than visible structural damage. The crash knocked out both power and water service at the residence, making it impossible for the family to remain there right away.

With essential utilities cut off, the home could not be used safely or comfortably after the impact. State police said the residence suffered extensive damage, and the family was left without a place to stay in the short term.

The damage underscores how a single crash can quickly become a broader emergency for the people living nearby. In this case, the collision affected not just the structure, but the family’s ability to live in the house at all.

Bond faces charges tied to eluding police and stolen property

According to court documents, Bond was charged with fleeing or attempting to elude police, receiving stolen property, criminal mischief, recklessly endangering another person and traffic offenses.

Those charges reflect both the decision to run from the traffic stop and the damage and risk that followed when the vehicle hit the home. State police have not said when Bond is scheduled to appear in court.

The case now moves into the court system as investigators and prosecutors work through the charges tied to the chase, the stolen vehicle and the crash into the residence.
