MESILLA, NM — An alleged drunk driver led a Mesilla deputy on a high-speed chase late Friday before his truck flipped, sent sparks into the street and damaged several nearby residences, according to the Mesilla Marshals’ Office.

The driver was later identified as Andrew Castro-Figueroa. Officials said he was arrested on suspicion of resisting, evading and obstructing, along with driving under the influence of alcohol, after the pursuit ended just after 11 p.m. on Sept. 18.

The Marshals’ Office said the crash happened after the truck was first seen accelerating from the Mesilla Town Plaza. From there, the vehicle moved through town at a high rate of speed before the chase ended in a wreck that drew officers and emergency response to the area.

According to a spokesperson for the Marshals’ Office, a deputy first noticed the truck accelerating from the Mesilla Town Plaza. The vehicle then made a right turn from Calle De Parian onto Avenida De Mesilla and continued at a high rate of speed.

The department said the deputy began following the truck as it continued north on Avenida De Mesilla. Officers reported that the driver refused to stop despite the deputy’s efforts to get the vehicle pulled over. The sequence of turns and acceleration quickly turned a traffic stop into a pursuit through the town.

The Marshals’ Office described the truck as moving fast enough that the situation escalated within moments of the initial sighting. The agency did not say how many officers joined the chase or whether any other vehicles were affected before the crash.

Crash sent sparks flying before the truck came to rest

The Marshals’ Office said the truck crashed after the pursuit continued northbound, with the vehicle emitting sparks and going airborne. After the impact, the truck turned west on Calle de Norte before coming to a stop.

Officials said the crash also caused damage to several nearby residences. No injuries were mentioned in the information released by the department, and the Marshals’ Office did not immediately say whether anyone inside the homes needed medical attention.

The wreck happened after 11 p.m., when traffic in the area was likely light, but the department did not provide more detail on the extent of the property damage. The sequence reported by deputies suggests the truck struck hard enough to leave debris and visible impact around the crash site.

Castro-Figueroa arrested on DUI and evading charges

Authorities identified the driver as Andrew Castro-Figueroa and said he was arrested for resisting, evading and obstructing, as well as driving under the influence of alcohol. He was later booked into the Doña Ana County Detention Center.

According to the Marshals’ Office, Castro-Figueroa admitted he saw the deputy’s emergency lights and decided not to stop. That admission became part of the case summary released by the department after the arrest.

The charges stem from both the chase and the suspected alcohol impairment. Officials said the truck driver was taken into custody after the crash and processing at the scene.

Breath test showed alcohol level nearly twice the legal limit

A breath test was administered after the arrest, and the Marshals’ Office said the result was a blood alcohol concentration of .14. That is nearly double the legal limit for driving.

The test result gave deputies a measurable basis for the DUI allegation, according to the department. Officials did not release additional testing details, and no court outcome was included in the information made public.

For investigators, the reading helped support the arrest that followed the pursuit and crash. The Marshals’ Office has not said whether any additional charges could be filed later.
