Must Watch Movies of 2023

2022 proved to be a somewhat great year for movies, but 2023 comes with newer and better promises. With directors like Greta Gerwig, Denis Villeneuve and Christopher Nolan returning to direct for the big screen . Even more so this year seems to be a promising one for sequel with the return of Indiana Jones for what could be his last adventure, and yet another John Wick ready to rampage. Here is a list of the must watch movies of this year.

 

Oppenheimer

Oppenheimer is a biographical film written and directed by Christopher Nolan staring Cillian Murphy as Robert J. Oppenheimer,”the father of the atomic bomb.” It’s based on American Prometheus, a biography written by Kai Bird and Martin J.Sherwin. Other than Murphy, the supporting cast includes Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr. and a plethora of talented actors.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-verse

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is the sequel to the critically acclaimed Spider-Man: Into the Spider Verse, it was originally supposed to come out in 2022 until it got moved to 2023. Shmeilk Moore and Hailey Steinfeld return to to their roles of Miles Morales and Gwen Stacey, respectively.They will also be joined by Oscar Isaac’s Miguel O’Hara, aka Spider-Man 2099, and Issa Ray as Spider Woman. Across the Spider-Verse comes out on June 2, 2023.

 

The Little Mermaid

The live action remake of Disney’s beloved fish-out-of-water story has some inspired casting with Melissa McCarthy taking on the role of Ursula, Awkwafina stars as Scuttle, and Javier Barden is King Triton. The film with also feature new tunes co-written by Lin Manuel Miranda, while Hailey Bailey will don some fins to play Ariel. It opens on May 26, 2023.

 

Ant- Man and the Wasp Quantumania

The third installment of the Ant-Man trilogy is upon us although it may have been delayed by an year, Quantamania perfectly helps set up the future phases of the MCU’s Multiverse Saga .The main cast of the franchise return to their respective roles along with new additions to the cast such as Jonathan Majors who will be portraying the villainous Kang who serves as the main antagonist for Quantamnia and future MCU projects, Kathryn  Newton as Cassandra ‘Cassie” Lang who portrays Paul Rudd’s (Ant-Man/Scott Lang) daughter ,the movie also stars Bill Murray although his role has not been disclosed yet. Quantamnia comes to theaters on February 17 ,2023.

 

Barbie

Barbie, directed and co-written by Greta Gerwig, puts a whole new spin on the doll in a dreamhouse story. It chronicles the story of the most famous doll as she’s banished from Barbieland and is introduced to our world. The film stars Magot Robbie as the titular character and Ryan Gosling. Barbie comes out on July 21, 2023.

 

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny

For the first time ever, a person not named Steven Spielberg is helming an Indiana Jones film. James Manigold directs the long awaited fifth installment and sequel to 2008’s Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. The film feature a plethora of actors such as Antonio Banderas, Mads Mikkelsen, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Shaunette Renée Wilson, Toby Jones, Boyd Holbrook, and, of course, the return of Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones. Dial of Destiny comes out June 30, 2023.

 

John Wick: Chapter 4

John Wick: Chapter 4 is directed by Chad Stahelski and stars Keanu Reeves. Although there is not much known about this film except the information given through the trailer, it seems that John is presumably at war with the high table and is likely presumed dead. Stahelski has also stated that there is a chance Chapter 4 will not have a “happy ending for its central characters.” Chapter:4 is set to release on March 24, 2023.

 

Dune: Part Two

Dune: Part Two serves as a sequel to Denis Villeneuve’s Dune, based on the book by Frank Herbert, a 1995 novel of the same name. It plans to cover the rest of the story. Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin, and Stellan Skarsgård will return to play their respective characters, along with new additions to cast such as Tim Blake Nelson and Austin Butler. Dune: Part Two comes to theaters in November 3, 2023.

 

The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes

Hunger Games director Francis Lawrence returns to direct the prequel, which is based on the novel of the same name by Suzzane Collins. The story primarily focuses on a younger Coriolanus Snow and his involvement in the Hunger Games before the events of the original series. The Ballad of the Songbirds and Snakes is set to come out on November 17, 2023.

 

The Super Mario Bros. Movie

The big screen adaptation of the famous Nintendo game is coming to theaters this year. It is being produced by none other than the creator of the game himself. Chris Pratt takes on the role of the beloved goomba-hopping plumber, along with Anya Taylor Joy ,who will be voicing Princess Peach. It will also star Jack Black and Seth Rogen as Bowser and Donkey Kong, respectively, and Charlie Day as Luigi. The Super Mario Bros. Movie comes to theaters on April 7, 2023.

 

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 is set to be the third and last installment to the Guardians franchise. James Gunn returns to direct the Guardians last stint, members of the original cast also return to play their respective characters, and Will Poulter joins the cast to play Adam Warlock, who was teased at the end of Vol.2.
