How A School Principal Spends His Sundays

Griffin Scoggins, Junior Editor

When I’m not busy running the school around, such as attending board meetings, answering a load of emails, or just connecting with the students, I use my Sundays as a way to decompress. During a regular school day for you students, I really do not have a set schedule. Sure, I get up around 6:20 every day and then go check for teacher absences, professional development days, and see for all the meetings I’m going to have to attend; however, most of these are rarely ever actually scheduled.

And some may question, “why don’t you just relax at home?” Most of the time I can’t as I am attending the football games, band competitions, volleyball games, and so much more though it’s “awesome to see the things kids take part in.”

After a long week full of these events, I use my Sundays to destress and to set myself up for the long week ahead of us. Saturdays are also spent from the out-of-town games for the football team, volleyball, or any of the other sports offered here at CHS. This is why my Sundays are so relaxed and not as chaotic as the other days.

The morning

Getting up for me, typically starts off with me “being one with my faith and my god” while listening to gospel music. It really gets me in the right headspace for the week. I try to start off these days as relaxed as possible since being a principal is one of the hardest jobs I’ve had but I do “believe that it is my purpose.” My wife and I then attend worship before heading to breakfast. One of our favorite spots to go is Sunrise Memphis, the place allows for my wife and us to just sit down and talk.

We use this time to also catch up with our daughter who is 25 and off in Chicago.

Midday:

After returning home from breakfast, we tend to just relax for a couple hours. We then will go walk our dog Baxter around the block or go wash the cars. Then after that, I work while my wife does her lesson plans, clear up the emails that I could have missed, and do my “pieces of work before 7pm.”  I find this to be useful as it allows for my wife and I to relax for the evening and allows for a sense of structure.

Evening:

When all of our work is done, we relax before having dinner. We tend to watch a lot of our favorite shows, such as: Stranger Things, Bridgerton, Greys Anatomy, House of Dragons, and a lot more. After we finish watching tv, I go to iron my clothes before work; I iron my clothes every night before heading to bed.
