Most people have heard the name Tim Burton, but quite a few haven’t discovered his best works.
Corpse Bride is newer compared to some of Burton’s work but is definitely a favorite. Corpse Bride follows the story of Victor Van Dort, who is engaged to be married, to Victoria Everglot. Victor is a very shy and timid character and struggles to complete his vows. To clear his mind, Victor takes a walk through the forest and finally says his vows correctly. Unfortunately, he accidentally proposes to a Corpse, Emily, hence the name Corpse Bride. Corpse Bride came out in 2005 and has an overall rating of 7.3/10 on IMDb. Like most Tim Burton movies, Corpse Bride is a little creepy. Most characters look unearthly or exaggerated. But, if you are into spooky things, I would recommend this movie.
One of the most famous Tim Burton movies is The Nightmare Before Christmas. Released in 1993, the film follows the character Jack Skellington as he rethinks the meaning of his life. Also known as The Pumpkin King, Jack wanders through the woods and comes across a circle of trees with doors marked with a symbol representing each holiday. He is fascinated with the door that has a Christmas tree on it. When he goes through the door he is transported to a town where, instead of everything being Halloween themed, everything is about Christmas. Jack is totally bewildered and doesn’t understand it but concludes that, this year, he wants to take part in Christmas. It seems the only sane one in the town is a rag doll named Sally, who tries to prevent Jack from stealing a different holiday while combating her feelings for him. The film has a rating of 7.9/10 on IMDb. The Nightmare Before Christmas is considered a Halloween or Christmas movie and is a favorite around both holidays.
Most everyone has heard the name Beetlejuice in their lifetime. Beetlejuice is about a young married couple, who unfortunately were killed in a car accident. Dead and trapped in their own house, they are determined to get the new homeowners out of their estate. They resort to summoning a self-proclaimed bio-exorcist, who can only be brought back by saying his name 3 times. As you can imagine, the bio-exorcist Beetlejuice wreaks havoc around their home and they must, somehow, put him back. The films rating on IMDb is 7.5/10 and is a classic around the 31st.
An oldie but a goodie, Edward Scissorhands is timeless. Up in a creepy mansion on the edge of a very colorful town, a scientist constructs Edward but instead of regular hands, they are scissors. After the scientist passes, Peg, a woman selling makeup, makes her way up to the old creepy mansion and finds Edward. She takes him to her house to care for him as if he were her own. Quickly, many people were fascinated by Edward and began giving him jobs to do with his scissor hands. But not everyone likes him very much. The movie’s rating is a 7.9/10 on IMDb and is a must see to get the full Tim Burton experience.
While these are not all of Tim Burton’s amazing collection, these were unquestionably the films at the top of the list.
