PlayStation’s State of Play 2023 livestream was just broadcasted, where they revealed several new games and DLCs (downloadable content) that will be released soon. Summer Games Fest 2023 was also broadcasted back in June, announcing several highly anticipated new releases. Lets talk about it.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth — February 29, 2024
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is the second part of the remake series of Square Enix’s highly successful video game, Final Fantasy VII, released in 1997. They started the remake trilogy with Final Fantasy VII Remake in 2020. The remake was adored by fans, however it didn’t cover the entire story of the original, only taking on around one third of it. This disappointed fans, who thought they would be getting the full game. This is changing, however, after the Summer Games Fest 2023 revealed Rebirth. While they didn’t have a set release date for Summer Games Fest, State of Play revealed February 29, 2024 as the set launch. The game will be exclusive to PS5.
Spider-Man 2 – October 20, 2023
Summer Games Fest set October 20th, 2023 as the release date for Sony’s Spider-Man 2, another PS5 exclusive. It’s now available for preorder for $69.99.
Resident Evil 4 Separate Ways DLC + VR2 Mode – September 21, 2023/Early Winter
Resident Evil 4 Remake originally follows its main character Leon Kennedy in search of the President’s missing daughter, Ashley. She was taken to a remote location in Spain by a cult, where the village inhabitants/cult followers have turned into zombie-like creatures. In a certain scene, it is revealed that a common side character, Ada Wong, is there also. While you don’t get to see her very often throughout the remake, Capcom’s reimagining of the original mini game, Separate Ways, features the same events as Leon’s story, but from Ada’s perspective. This is very exciting for players, as the only other game where you can play Ada’s story is Resident Evil 6, a story game split up between all character’s perspectives. This DLC was revealed to be releasing September 21st, 2023, on the State of Play Livestream.
A few Resident Evil games have been adapted to VR, including Resident Evil 2 Remake, 3 Remake, 7: Biohazard, and 8: Village. Now, Resident Evil 4 Remake will be joining them early this winter.
Alan Wake 2 – October 17, 2023
Alan Wake is a famous horror game following a popular thriller author, Alan Wake. He is trying to solve the mystery of his wife’s disappearance. While on this hunt, he begins having visions and nightmares of characters and plot points of his latest novel. Alan Wake 2 will follow two characters: Alan Wake and Saga Anderson. Saga Anderson is an FBI Agent investigating ritualistic murders that have been happening in the same town Alan Wake went missing in, while Alan is trying to escape the “Dark Place.” Summer Games Fest revealed the release date to be October 17th, 2023.
Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis – September 7, 2023
The main villain of Final Fantasy VII is Sephiroth, whose origins have been loosely revealed throughout Final Fantasy VII and Crisis Core, however players still don’t have the full story. Ever Crisis will follow a new main cast and story line, which players expect to reveal more of the infamous villain’s backstory. Beta testing began on July 6th and the game was later released September 7th, 2023. It’s a free mobile game, available on both iOS and Android.
Little Nightmares III – 2024
While it wasn’t announced during either Summer Games Fest or State of Play, Gamescom highlighted the trailer for Little Nightmares III. After releasing Little Nightmares II, Tarsier Studios said that they would not be making a third game, however BANDAI NAMCO, the game publisher, said they wanted to continue the series. Supermassive Games picked it up and will be making the new game.
