Club Spotlight: Diamond Girls

Annalise Argiro, Staff writer

Are you a fan of going to a baseball game and cheering the team on? If so, you should check out the CHS Club called Diamond Girls. Diamond Girls is managed by Markayla Ewing (President) and Tailar Lewis (Vice President) and is sponsored by Coach Brooks and Coach Harken. All grades are allowed to join the Diamond Girls Club. If any of you out there are interested, here are words of advice from Markayla Ewing and Tailar Lewis about the Diamond Girls Club.

Q: What is the Diamond Girls Club about?

Markayala- Diamond Girls is a Club dedicated to supporting the CHS baseball team!

Tailar- To me Diamond Girls is about supporting the baseball program to the best of our abilities.

Q: How do you get into the Club?

Markayala- There’s a signup link, fill it out, and your application will be reviewed!

Tailar- During Club sign up, we have posters all around where you can scan the QR code on the board. If your miss the sign up, you can email one of the presidents and let us know about your interest in the club.

Q: Do you have to have good grades to get in?

Markayala- Good grades are preferred, since it’s mostly an after-school club. Baseball games are almost every single day, so it’s very time consuming. You must find a way to stay on top of your schoolwork!

Tailar- Yes, we would prefer that the girls in the club have good grades when joining the Clubs.

Q: What jobs do Diamond Girls do at the baseball game?

Markayala and Tailar- At baseball games, the Diamond Girls volunteer in concessions but besides that we are mostly sitting in the stands cheering on our Diamond dragons!

Q: How many people allowed in Diamond Girls?

Markayala and Tailar- Every year it depends on how many players there are. This year, there are 52 players meaning we can have no more than 52 Diamond Girls.

Q: Do you have to know what baseball is all about?

Markayala- You don’t really have to know baseball, some of the Diamond Girls still think there is a halftime in baseball. It’s just preferred you learn the basics of baseball. If not, you are just sitting there, staring at a field for 2 hours.

Tailar- You don’t have to know every little fact about baseball but having some knowledge about the sport and program is preferred.

Q: How long has Diamond Girls been around?

Markayala- Diamond Girls at Collierville High has probably been around since before me. Although, the Club was reinvented last year after Covid.

Tailar- Diamond Girls has been around for years but with the pandemic the Club slowed its involvement. In the past two years, it has been making a comeback.

Q: What are the Club meetings about?

Markayala- Brainstorming ideas on ways to support our boys, and we once played a game to see who knows baseball the best.

Tailar- Depending on the time of the year as baseball season approaches, the meetings move away from planning what player each Diamond Girl supports and more toward who works concessions and making sure each player has a goody bag and coming out and supporting for the upcoming events.

Q: What’s your favorite thing about the Club?

Markayala and Tailar favorite thing about the Club is the parents in concessions.
