Student Spotlight: Michael Chen
Michael Chen is a senior at CHS and former student in the 6th through 8th grade STEM Scholar program. He’s currently researching tornadogenisis – the process through which tornados form – as well as supercell development and maintenance. Beyond this, he studies the blending of microphysics schemes with deterministic cloud models. These sciences all help to take meteorology one step further.
Beyond simple study and research, Mr. Chen was a sole author presenter at the 30th American Meteorological Society’s Conference on Severe Storms, the first and only high schooler to present at this event. He was a National Finalist/IESO Team Selection Camp Invitee for the 2022 United States Earth Science Olympiad – meaning he was in the Top 40 scorers in the USA. This also means that he is one of a select few Olympiad campers from Tennessee within the past two decades, through the Olympiads. Adding to his list of accomplishments, Mr. Chen was named a Scholar at the 2023 (82nd) Regeneron/Intel/Westinghouse Science Talent Search. He was also within the top 2.5% of scorers in the American Mathematics Competitions, qualifying him for the American Invitational Mathematics Examinations, and is President of the Scioly and Science Bowl Clubs.
Michael Chen is a picture of true academic achievement at Collierville High School, which prides itself on a variety of honors and AP programs that set students up for a high-achieving future. We’re proud to call him a member of our Dragon family.
